What's a Vibrator?

After my previous review of the Jack Rabbit Vibrator, I received a lot of messages from some of you asking ‘What’s a vibrator?’ You can only imagine my surprise to learn that didn’t know what a vibrator was.! But if you’re all asking, then for this – which happens to be among my favourite toys in my bag — I am most happy to explain. I’ll try to keep this short, So let’s get started, yes?

What’s a vibrator?

In a nutshell, a vibrator is a sex toy that erm… vibrates. Vibrators are used on various areas of the body for erotic stimulation. And before I go on, here’s a bit of history:

Vibrators were invented in the late 19th century, vibrators were initially used as a medical instrument for pain relief and the treatment of various mental issues. Frenchman Romain Vigouroux has been cited as the inventor of the vibrator. However, English physician and inventor Joseph Mortimer Granville, who also developed an early model vibe has been called the ‘Father of the Modern Electromechanical Vibrator.’

In about 1900, vibrators began to be marketed in magazine ads for home use, but this was shut down after 1920 when vibrators started becoming associated with pornography.

Since around 2010, Most vibrators have contained a powered device which pulsates or throbs, usually used externally on the clitoris or penis, and can also be used internally in the vagina or in the anus.

How are vibrators used?

Vibrators are used by both men and women alike. But since I very little about using vibes on guys, I’ll be focusing on women. But if you’re a guy who uses a vibrator for stimulation or has had one used on you, leave a message in the comments. I’d love to know your thoughts. Moving on…

Many women find using a vibrator during masturbation to be the easiest way to have an orgasm. Most people (i.e., men) don’t know this, but both the clitoris and vulva contain nerve endings that are particularly responsive to the sensation of vibration.

It’s also great to bring in a vibrator when having sex with your partner for clit stimulation during penetration. Just a heads up, if you’re sleeping with a man, there’s a likelihood that he’ll become a bit ego-bruised when you suggest adding a vibrator to the party. Some guys take it personally, like just their penis isn’t enough at times. And just so you know, I used to be one of those bruised-ego types. But I was pretty young back then, and know better now. I use them so I can rest between orgasms, or warm my submissives up a bit.

In any case, just let your guy know that you love his cock (without sounding like you’re pitying him), but you also need your toys at times. If he’s still being weird and doesn’t want to do it, considering keeping the vibrator and getting rid of the guy. Seriously, he’ll learn — but you’ll likely go through hell first.

Vibrators can be good for masturbation

What different kinds of vibrators are there?

There are a lot of different kinds of vibrators, available in a lot of different shapes and models. Some vibrators designed for women stimulate both the clitoris and the vagina. Some vibrators designed for couples stimulate the genitals of both partners.

You can find vibrators that range in strength from super-powerful wand types, like the Hitachi Magic Wand to gentle bullet vibrators. Vibrators can be battery-powered, cordless and rechargeable, or plug-in. Wand vibrators, typically smooth and rocket-shaped are usually what most people go for.

There are also palm vibrators, which are shaped like a curved massage stone, and vibrators that are curved and meant to be inserted into the vagina. To be honest, you’ll likely play around a bit before you find one that works best for you. Which brings me to my next point…

Buying your first vibrator

Buying a vibrator is probably one of the most important decisions that a woman will make in her adult life. Of course, you can buy your sex toys (new boyfriend?) online, but I would personally recommend going to a shop where you can ask questions, and get a chance to touch and feel the products before you make a decision.

If you decide to visit a sex toy store, the most important thing to do is to find a salesperson that you feel comfortable asking rather direct questions. You want to be specific and let the salesperson know what exactly what you’re looking for. For example, if you prefer clitoral stimulation and you don’t want to put a toy inside you, tell them that! Feel free to ask what their favourite or most popular products are.

In conclusion

I’ll get into buying a vibrator in another article, but in the meantime, if you’re looking for a sex toy shop to buy your first vibrator, I made a list of some of my favourite shops that you might want to have a look at.

Once you choose your toy, make sure to ask about cleaning and sanitising your product. Typically, most rubber dildos and vibrators need to be washed with soap and water after every use, but each toy will have its own specific instructions.

With all this said, if you don’t already own a vibrator, you should definitely think about it.
