What does Amaurophilia Mean?

Do you like the thought of being shagged whilst blindfolded? There's a word for that.
3 January 2018

I was asked a long time ago by one of my submissives if there was a word for ‘people that like to fuck someone when they’re blindfolded.’ I thought for a few moments and replied, ‘Yes there is … It’s called Amaurophilia, I think.’

I figured that if she asked, there are probably loads more people that didn’t know about this fetish. I’ve decided that because I happen to enjoy blindfolding my submissives and play partners, I’d take a moment and talk about it a bit. So let’s get started.

What is Amaurophilia, Anyway?

By definition, amaurophilia is a sexual fetish or preference for blindness, either real or simulated. The word itself comes from the Greek words amaurosis, meaning the loss of vision, and philia, which denotes a fondness for, or attraction to a specified thing.

About Amaurophiliacs

People with amaurophilia are known as amaurophiliacs, and may have a preference for sexual partners who are blind, have them wear blindfolds to experience what it is like to be blind, or have sex in complete darkness to simulate blindness.

Some amaurophiliacs may even do this outside of sex, through the use of blindfolds or vision-restricting contact lenses, along with a white cane for mobility. Some amaurophiliacs have also been known to learn Braille in order to enhance their experience during sessions.

What’s the Attraction with Amaurophilia?

There are a lot of theories as to why some amaurophiles like to have sex in total darkness. Some suggest that they simply enjoy the incresed sensitivity that comes with sexual stimulation when the sense of sight is removed. Others say that amaurophiles might prefer sex in darkness because of low self-esteem, feelings of sexual inadequacy, or guilt about sex or nudity, for religious reasons or otherwise.

In Conclusion

Most people with amaurophilia enjoy pretty healthy sex lives. And just in passing, most people are uncomfortable having sex under bright lights. This is totally normal, and isn’t an indication of amaurophilia. One more thing: Amaurophilia is closely related to lygerastia – a fetish for engaging in sexual activities in darkness. I might talk about this in another article, if you’re interested.

So after reading this, do you think that amaurophilia is your thing or isn’t for you? Leave a comment below, I’d love to hear about it.
