To filmmakers, BDSM is an interesting subject that they often use to delve deeper into what some of them feel is a dark zone of the human psyche. Personally speaking, what they think is a dark zone is kinda tame to most of us β well, to me, in any case.
Very few films have managed to portray BDSM accurately in my opinion, and most of them use the subject simply as a provocative device β which really sucks because this lifestyle is more than just plotline filler. Hell, even porn has mucked it up more times than I can count.
Now, there are some great BDSM-related films that have managed to successfully depict this lifestyle in many different ways. I gave a list of some of my favourite BDSM movies a while back, and those films did an excellent job of giving viewers a good idea of what this lifestyle involves. And while I didn’t include them in the infographic, they are all films that I’m pretty sure you’ll love, no matter how new to this lifestyle you may or may not be.
And with this said, here are my top 5 BDSM movies.
What do you think? What films would you have listed? Let me know in the comments.
Secretary is the best love story ever!
Nice to know that you’re a fan, Marina! I’ve been a fan of James Spader for a long time, and this is one of the best roles I’ve seen him play.
Is it just a coincidence that the main character in 9 1/2wks. Is named John Gray (Christian Grey), and that Kim Bassinger played “Mrs. Robinson “in fifty shades darker? While I LOVE 9 1/2wks. ,the fifty shades books are erotica, but not at all about a true dom/sub relationship. I know I’m not the only one who’s had the same question.
I think it’s coincidence, Dee Dee. 9 1/2 Weeks came out in 1986. They might have cast Kim Basinger because she’s familiar with the genre. I think Fifty Shades of Grey was based on the movie ‘Secretary’, to be honest.
And yes, you’re absolutely correct. Fifty Shades of Grey is simply erotica. Anyone believing that the books are an accurate depiction of this lifestyle is either severely delusional, or uninformed.
