An emo tune for the 2020s that would leave its listeners yearning for more, ‘I’ll Be OK’, the debut single from 22-year-old singer-songwriter and Chicago native Roxy Knightly, seems to be an unveiling of raw emotion.

‘I wrote this song when I was dealing with a major heartbreak, in efforts to heal,’ Knightly says. ‘Originally, I had allowed the heavy weight to dictate my desire to live. One day, I decided that I wasn’t going to allow it so much power over me. So I reminded myself, that I’ll be ok.’

Check out the song below:

I gotta say, I really like this song. It takes my inner emo kid and me back to our skateboarding days. The chorus opens with ‘Let’s forgive, and never forget, all the lessons learned’, and for some reason, those words really resonate with me.

Honestly speaking, if music were food, this song would be five pounds of smoked bacon crisping in a pan of maple syrup (Don’t @ me, I haven’t had breakfast, and I’m starving).

Another thing that stuck out to me is that Knightly seemed to be channelling Metric’s Emily Haines in the song, which I’m totally okay with, as I’m a fan of Metric.

Knightly says that I’ll be OK is just a single at the moment, and there are plans to begin work on the music video soon. I personally can’t wait to see what’s next.

If you’re interested (and you most certainly should be), you can follow Roxy Knightly on Instagram at @roxyknightly, and of course on SoundCloud.

With all this said, for anyone who’s ever been in a break-up, or still hanging onto the memory of some stupid twat that did you dirty, you should take a listen to this song, and know that you’ll be okay.

So what do YOU think about the song? Do you think I should add it to a playlist like Yes Sir Vol 1? Let me know in the comments.
